(Not to mention the mini Black Star reunion on arguably the strongest track of the disc, History.) Let’s just say The Ecstatic has made its point, and that Mos has proved that he can survive without Kweli.Anthony Hamilton Comin' From Where I'm From (Live from Atlanta) (32.79 MB)Īnthony Hamilton Comin' From Where I'm From (Live from Atlanta)Īnthony Hamilton Comin From Where I'm From (2003) (72.06 MB)Īnthony Hamilton Comin From Where I'm From (2003) It is simply Mos at his best lacing his near-lethargic voiced rhymes over melodic yet consistent beats. It is also not your ‘check me out being weird and abstract by not having an actual album cover for my album!’ Mos Def. The Ecstatic is not your ‘look at me being different by supplementing my rapping with rock music!’ Mos Def. Mos Def works with what he already has, instead of trying anything gimmicky. A noticeable variation is the inclusion of a sample of Malcolm X speaking of revolution, change and a better world in his sturdy, commanding voice. A sluggish Mos is heard solemnly proclaiming ‘In the name of God, most Compassionate, most Merciful’ in Arabic. Wednesday, JAlbum Review: Mos Def - The Ecstatic The Mighty Mos, Black Dante, Boogie Man, Pretty Flaco, Freaky Night Watchman - whatever name you pick, people who know hip-hop will know exactly who you mean. His newest release, The Ecstatic, starts out just like any of his other projects. After his worst release to date, the astoundingly lackluster 2006 release True Magic, Mos Def had a lot to prove. Mos Def’s albums have become significantly poorer and poorer as the most relevant album of his solo-career, Black on Both Sides, continues to gather dust on his proverbial discographical shelf. Since the separation of Black Star and the start of Mos Def and Talib Kweli’s solo careers, it’s very conceivable to say that Kweli has done considerably better on his own. ![]()
